During class Observations and volunteering at the school School use for Observantions i have the opportunity to watch the student in class, at lunch, PE and other activities. This seed and my next seed seen to mirror somthing the teacher and parents of three of the students in this First Grade class. I know that doctors and counselors do see that children need to be tested but is the answer always medicine. One student in this class may eventually be on medication though I hope other means will be explored first . The teacher and the parents have to work together to try and foster a solution that will be benefical to the student and the class. One of the students in question is a girl and the other two are boys.

This was very interesting. In the article it said that the child may need mediation and I disagree. Medication is not the cure for everything. I just think that the child is very social and friendly and just needs to be taught when is a good time to talk freely and when to limit the talking.

Ok wow my coworker is also having this problem but her child is just in kindergarden. It seems he is a very social person but very bright. He does finish all of his work on time and when the teacher checks his work, it's all done correctly. So, what do you do? she has been working with the teacher to come up with different ways to help combat this problem. What's even more interesting is that her pediatrician also recommended her getting him tested for hyperactivity. I suggested that she get him tested for the gifted classes because she hasn't done that step and like this article said the last thing she needs to resort to is testing for hyperactivity. I know from my personal experience with my child, she did the same and was tested for gifted classes. Even though she didn't score high enough her teacher would bring extra work to class to keep my child busy. Sort of like busy work. That's what helped my child and as she grew, the latter years got better without the help of any medication.

Sounds like the student is not engaged enough to hold his attention. Some students need to be more stimulated than others and it takes a teacher who is willing to teach to each student and not the class as if they are all the same. I agree medications is and should be the last resort. I have worked with students that were so over medicated that they actually drooled on their work. It is a sad time if we think only medications is the answer.

I think being talkative in the first grade is a very natural display...the class I observed the children were talkative and social. I agree we are to fast to assume that children need medication which distracts from the children who actually have learning disabilities versus children who have the STRONG desire to be social.
